Textbook Order Information

As a general policy, the library does not purchase physical textbooks due to a lack of space and the frequency of new editions. Instead, we offer a large collection of electronic books that may also be used as textbooks. Electronic books may be accessed both on and off campus free of charge to the whole William James College community. We encourage faculty to choose from this collection in order to provide the most cost-effective option for students.

If the textbook you wish to use is not available as an electronic book, you must submit a Textbook Order Form to your department coordinator. Once submitted, your department will forward the Textbook Order Form to the library and the textbook will be added to our MBSDirect bookstore, where students can rent or purchase the books.

Recently enacted federal requirements dictate that a textbook list must be made available to students at the time of registration:

"The United States government passed the Higher Education Opportunity Act (HEOA) of 2008 in response to increasing costs associated with higher education, particularly textbooks and supplemental course materials.

Signed into law in August of 2008, HEOA is an extension of the original Higher Education Act (HEA) of 1965, and requires every higher learning institution in the United States that receives federal funding to disclose accurate course material information, including ISBNs and retail prices. Transparency is an underlying goal of HEOA because it allows your students to search for the most affordable textbook options" (MBSDirect).

Therefore, all Textbook Order Forms MUST be submitted at least three weeks prior to the start of registration. Individual deadlines may vary and are set by the department coordinators. If you are using an electronic book, you do not need to submit a Textbook Order Form. Please contact your department coordinator for more information.

If you would like to place a personal copy of a textbook on reserve, or would like more information about course reserves, please contact the library.
