Collecting Data

Once your committee approves your proposal, you will need to set up your survey in Qualtrics. Do this while you're waiting for IRB approval so that you are ready to launch your survey upon approval. Here are some tips:

1. The IRB requires that you have a link in your informed consent so that people can download a copy of the informed consent form. Click herefor instructions on how to insert a link in your informed consent form so that participants can download the form.

2. You cannot require participants to answer any questions unless you indicated that those questions would be required in your Method chapter and your informed consent (and the IRB approved your study with those questions required). You can request that participants respond to the questions (this option is under Response requirements on the left side of the screen when you click on a question in Qualtrics). Force response requires that participants answer the question before moving forward. Request response gives participants a message that tells them they did not respond to all of the questions and asks them if they want to move forward without answering.

3. By default, Qualtrics labels each question with a number (e.g., Q1, Q2). I recommend changing these labels in Qualtrics before you launch your survey. If you do not change these labels, then those will be the labels of your variables when you download your data to SPSS. You will then need to rename all of the variables so you can tell which variable is which. Renaming them in Qualtrics ahead of time will save you time later.

4. Qualtrics always includes a default end-of-survey message. Replace this message with your debrief forms. You will need multiple end-of-survey messages depending on how participants respond to your survey. At minimum, you will need two (in red squares in the image below): one for people who do not agree to your informed consent and one for people who complete your entire study. You will also need a third if you have inclusion criteria that people need to meet (e.g., no felony convictions unless civil rights have been restored). To replace the default message, go into the Survey Flow view in Qualtrics. Look for the red block that says End of Survey. Click Customize --> Custom end of survey message... --> My Library --> New Message. Copy and paste your message. Click OK.
